About the project

The SUARE project was developed against the backdrop of a rapidly ageing world: by 2030, 1 in 6 people will be 60 years or older, and by 2050 this number will reach 2.1 billion (WHO). In line with the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030), SUARE set out to reduce inequalities in access to health and well-being among older people by creating age-friendly digital tools that can proactively support their health and quality of life.

The project aimed to enrich the content of mobile applications and a web portal and to learn from similar initiatives in different countries, in order to build healthy and reliable communication bridges for older people and their families. Over 24 months, the project increased the digital skills and competences of elderly people, while also engaging young people in the design and development of supportive software.

Within the scope of SUARE, the partners produced 2 mobile applications, 1 web-based training module, 5 books, 188 exercise and information videos and carried out extensive field studies and data analysis in 4 countries, making all outputs freely available.

Objectives

The main objectives of the SUARE project were to:

  • Promote sensitivity and engagement among young people regarding the needs and problems of older people, and motivate them to develop software that benefits the elderly population.
  • Encourage older people and their families to acquire and further develop digital skills, enabling them to use age-friendly digital tools with confidence.
  • Develop innovative support software and a dedicated platform for older people to help them build and maintain reliable communication bridges with caregivers, family members and services.
  • Enhance digital competences by creating age-appropriate software solutions and making them accessible in multiple languages.
  • Increase health and safety awareness among older adults through digital tools that provide information on healthy living, prevention and active ageing.
  • Reach and inform a wide audience through large-scale dissemination of project outputs and results.

 In quantitative terms, the project:

  • Reached a total of 721,620 people.
  • Generated healthy lifestyle videos for older people that were watched 56,000 times in 80 countries.
  • Achieved 654,400 views of project-related press news.
  • Attracted 11,300 visitors to the project website and Salto-Youth project pages.

Activities

To achieve its objectives, the SUARE project implemented a coherent set of activities organised under the following strands:

Needs analysis and guidelines

  • Conducted field studies in 4 countries to understand the needs, expectations and everyday challenges of elderly individuals and their families.
  • Analysed and summarised the results in 5 books (Turkish, English, French, German and Spanish), forming a “SUARE Needs and Data Analysis” base for all further work.

SUARE mobile applications and web portal

  • Developed 2 age-friendly mobile applications (Android & iOS) tailored to the needs of older people and elderly care workers.
  • Created a web-based education portal providing structured learning modules, information materials and interactive resources to support healthy ageing and digital participation.

Content development and public support materials

  • Produced 188 information and health videos (in 5 languages) offering guidance on healthy lifestyles, daily exercises, prevention and quality of life in older age.
  • Developed digital books and other supporting materials that present data analysis and practical recommendations in an accessible format.

SUARE Handbook and documentation

  • Compiled a SUARE handbook and complementary documentation describing the methodology, tools and good practices, enabling other organisations to replicate and adapt the approach.

Transnational cooperation, training and dissemination

  • Organised transnational project management meetingslearning/teaching/training activities and multiplier events to coordinate the work and promote the results.
  • Carried out street events, seminars, institutional visits, email campaigns, press releases, training events and exchanges with subject-matter experts to disseminate outputs in 80 countries.
  • Provided information about the Erasmus+ programme and its opportunities to participants and stakeholders.

As a result, SUARE created a sustainable digital ecosystem of tools and resources – mobile apps, a web education portal, digital books and videos – all made freely accessible via Salto, E+ platforms, the project website and social media channels, supporting healthier, more connected and digitally included ageing.
