About the project

The PRACTICE project was implemented over 38 months (2018–2021) in six EU countries (Italy, Germany, Austria, Greece, Denmark and the UK). It responded to two key needs: innovating Continuing Professional Development (CPD) so that it truly meets teachers’ real needs, and linking CPD and policy to concrete school practice in preventing radicalisation through the promotion of critical thinking. Rooted in the Paris Declaration (2015) and RAN conclusions, PRACTICE focused on empowering teachers to work on social, civic and cultural competences and critical thinking as a core strategy against radicalisation in secondary schools. The project developed an innovative Radicalisation Prevention Programme (RPP) as open educational resources (OER) and directly involved 120 teachers and 339 students from 40 schools, while reaching many more stakeholders across Europe.

Objectives

The project aimed to develop an innovative, collaborative EU-wide CPD programme on radicalisation prevention, tailored to the concrete needs of teachers and school leaders. It sought to empower teachers with knowledge, tools and methods to address diversity, controversial issues and early signs of radicalisation in the classroom. At the same time, PRACTICE aimed to enhance critical thinking skills and strengthen citizenship, freedom, tolerance and non-discrimination among students, fostering the inclusion of learners from all ethnic, faith and social backgrounds. A further objective was to bridge policy and practice, using evidence from schools to formulate policy recommendations and to position schools more strongly in the overall effort against radicalisation.

Activities

PRACTICE started with a Comparative Research Report (IO1) based on desk research and fieldwork with 108 participants, mapping needs, gaps and good practices in the partner countries. On this basis, the partnership designed the PRACTICE Radicalisation Prevention Programme (IO2) and Guidelines for Teachers (IO3) as core CPD tools, and piloted them through training seminars for teachers and classroom workshops with students. Feedback from teachers, students, stakeholders and policy makers was collected and analysed, leading to the PRACTICE Policy Recommendations Paper (IO4), which proposes ways to improve educational offers in Europe regarding radicalisation prevention and critical thinking. Throughout the project, partners organised national and European dissemination activities, involved schools, NGOs, cultural institutions, parents, academics and RAN representatives, and ensured that the RPP remains freely accessible so that teachers and educators across Europe can continue to use and adapt it in their own contexts.
