About the project
This project was developed by VET organisations committed to improving their training methods for VET trainees and adults facing illectronism (digital illiteracy). Many learners do not have adequate equipment or basic digital skills to participate in online training, complete administrative procedures or access digital public services. As society increasingly requires digital literacy for professional, cultural and social integration, this gap deepens existing inequalities and increases the social vulnerability of already fragile groups. The project therefore set out to reduce the digital divide by providing both access to low-cost digital tools and supportive training, enabling adults of all ages to use digital technologies effectively and safely.
Objectives
The main aim was to upgrade trainees’ computer skills and equip them at low cost, so they could better integrate into the labour market and society and fully benefit from digital learning opportunities. To do this, the project combined digital courses with a practical workshop where participants could access and acquire low-cost computers using free and open-source software. A key principle was that digital training only makes sense if people actually have access to the tools. At the same time, the project aimed to promote the sustainable reuse of computer equipment, linking social inclusion with environmental responsibility.
Activities
The project was structured around four work packages (WPs). It started with bottom-up field research using study circles to analyse the real digital needs and skills gaps of the target group and to map the situation of illectronism. This led to the creation of a skills test and a guide on digital illiteracy and computer needs for trainers. Based on these findings, partners designed learning modules and a full workshop format covering how to choose a second-hand computer, install and use free/open-source operating systems and software, and develop core digital competences (navigation, online search, communication, digital security, use of e-learning platforms and online classroom tools). A methodology for workshop implementation and a learning platform were developed to support experimentation. Finally, the project produced an implementation and experimentation report and an impact analysis of digital skills, documenting how participants’ competences improved and providing a model that can be replicated by other training providers.
