About the project
This project responds to the rise of populism, disinformation and hate speech around migration by strengthening the media literacy of youth workers. As youth workers are often on the frontline of shaping young minds and local narratives, the project focuses on equipping them to recognise, analyse and counter misleading or hostile migration discourses. By using media literacy as a tool for human rights, peace and inclusive dialogue, the project supports youth workers in guiding young people to become critical thinkers and responsible digital citizens who defend European values and democratic systems.
Objectives
The main objective is to deepen youth workers’ understanding and skills in media literacy, so that they are not persuaded by distorted migration narratives nor unintentionally reproduce stereotypes and hate speech in their work. The project aims to strengthen their ability to navigate complex media environments, critically assess sources, and deconstruct disinformation and misinformation on migration. At the same time, it seeks to empower youth workers to facilitate informed, inclusive and rights-based discussions with young people, linking media literacy with human rights, peace education and intercultural understanding. Ultimately, the project intends to create a transnational community of youth workers who promote balanced, fact-based and empathetic narratives on migration in their organisations and local communities.
Activities
The core activity is a 6-day residential training course in Munich, Germany on Media Literacy for Human Rights, Peace and Tackling Migration Disinformation, for 30 youth workers aged 18–30 from nine partner countries (Germany, Austria, France, Türkiye, Lithuania, Italy, Spain, Poland and Cyprus). The programme combines non-formal and informal learning methods and experiential activities, with a strong focus on intercultural learning, participation and human rights education. Sessions provide space for participants to share knowledge, exchange stories, analyse real media cases and practice critical evaluation of information, particularly on migration. After the training, a follow-up Zoom webinar reinforces learning, supports reflection and encourages participants to apply and multiply their new skills in their own youth work contexts, contributing to more informed, resilient and inclusive communities.
