About the project
The Know Your Rights (KYR) project aims to train migrant workers to better understand and exercise their labour rights, both under national legislation and EU employment law. Research and FRA reports show that migrant workers are among the most vulnerable to exploitation, often due to limited information on rights (e.g. minimum wage, contracts, working conditions) and concentration in precarious, low-skilled and insecure jobs.
KYR responds by combining online tools and peer mentoring to deliver accessible, multilingual rights information directly to migrant communities. The consortium consists of 7 partners from 5 European countries, all experienced in migration, adult education, social innovation and inclusion (e.g. Einurð in Iceland, Jafnréttishús, CSI, Verein Multikulturell, Acción Laboral, Social Innovation Fund, Caminos). Together they will develop good practices and scalable processes that can be adapted to new migrant groups and contexts and used by key stakeholders such as trade unions and NGOs.
Objectives
The KYR project pursues the following main objectives:
- Improve migrant workers’ knowledge of their rights in the labour market, covering national laws and EU employment standards (e.g. contracts, wages, working time, non-discrimination, access to support).
- Develop and test effective outreach approaches using online tools and peer mentoring, ensuring that information is delivered in 3–5 migrant languages per country and tailored to different communities.
- Build a network of trained bilingual peers who act as peer mentors / e-confidants, supporting their communities in understanding and using rights-related information.
- Create sustainable, open educational resources (videos, curricula, digital content) hosted on a multilingual “Know Your Rights” platform, enabling other organisations (e.g. unions, migrant associations) to reuse and adapt materials.
- Generate evidence-based processes and good practices (through Competence GAP analysis and evaluation) that can be transferred to new regions, sectors and migrant groups, contributing long-term to reduced exploitation and better access to justice for migrant workers.
Activities
To achieve these objectives, KYR will implement a coherent package of activities built around five intellectual outputs (O1–O5), multiplier events and a final conference:
- Competence GAP analysis (O1)
- Map stakeholders, existing services and support gaps for migrant workers in each partner country.
- Identify at least 3 migrant groups per country (15+ groups overall) and select 3–5 key languages per country to be addressed in the project.
- Establish national / regional reference groups of 8–10 stakeholders (e.g. unions, NGOs, authorities) to guide and validate the work.
- Curriculum and training content (O2)
- Develop a training curriculum and materials for bilingual peers, focusing on labour rights, communication and mentoring skills, and on how to explain complex information in accessible ways.
- Peer-led content and KYR videos (O3)
- Select 8–10 bilingual peers per country and train them in a peer mentoring workshop (O5) based on the curriculum.
- Involve peers in co-creating and presenting KYR video content and digital materials adapted to each target group and language.
- Know Your Rights platform (O4)
- Set up and gradually expand a multilingual online platform:
- Initially as an information site for the project and stakeholders.
- Subsequently as an open educational resource hub hosting videos, learning materials and tools in different languages for different migrant groups.
- Ensure all materials are open source so that workers’ unions, NGOs and other actors can integrate them into their own services.
- Set up and gradually expand a multilingual online platform:
- Peer mentoring workshop and roll-out (O5)
- Implement peer mentoring training in each country, turning peers into e-confidants who can reach out to migrant workers, answer questions and guide them to support structures.
The project will organise 6 multiplier events, 5 INFO days and a final conference to disseminate results, engage new stakeholders and encourage uptake of the KYR model.
