About the project

The project aims to improve food literacy among both young people and the wider public. Its goal is to provide reliable and easily accessible nutrition information in order to foster a critical awareness of food products, labels and ingredients. The project is implemented in four countries (Türkiye, Austria, Belgium and Romania).

Based on a comprehensive needs analysis, a multilingual (five-language) mobile application will be developed, offering users trustworthy information on ingredients, additives (E-codes) and nutritional values. In addition, a “Needs Analysis Book” will be produced to present the research findings in an accessible format.

Objectives

  • Promoting food literacy: Enabling consumers to critically assess food information, understand labels and recognise widespread misinformation.
  • Developing a mobile application: Based on the needs analysis, a multilingual app will be created to provide information on different foods, additives and nutritional values, supporting informed purchasing decisions.
  • Needs analysis and scientific preparation: Conducting a comprehensive needs analysis in four countries through surveys and interviews. The results will be published in a multilingual “Food Literacy Needs Analysis Book” in both digital and printed form.
  • Raising health and safety awareness: Increasing public awareness of balanced, safe and sustainable nutrition. Improved food literacy can help reduce health problems such as obesity, food allergies and intolerances.
  • Combating misinformation: Addressing misleading or one-sided nutrition information, particularly on social media. The project supports the development of a critical mindset so that young people and society as a whole can make informed decisions.

Activities

  • Needs analysis:
    • Online and offline surveys as well as focus groups in Türkiye, Austria, Belgium and Romania
    • Evaluation and synthesis of the results in the “Needs Analysis Book” (5 languages, digital and printed)
  • Development of a mobile application:
    • Defining the app requirements on the basis of the needs analysis
    • Developing a five-language app that provides user-friendly information on food additives, E-numbers, allergens and nutritional values
  • Documentation and video material:
    • Production of information videos and a short documentary on food literacy and healthy nutrition
