About the project
The project addresses illiteracy as a pervasive yet invisible barrier that limits adults’ autonomy, civic and social rights, access to qualifications and adaptation to workplace changes. Through the WIFI thematic workshops, it uses manual production (woodworking, pottery, etc.) and daily life activities (cooking, gardening, care) as entry points to develop basic skills and combat illiteracy in a concrete, non-stigmatising way. The focus is not on teaching a trade, but on building essential competences through experiential learning and group-based manual work combined with individual guidance. By offering participants a first professional-like experience adapted to their abilities, the project strengthens their foundations for further training, integration in work integration enterprises, specialised courses or direct employment, and thus improves their social and professional inclusion prospects.
Objectives
The primary objective was to develop pedagogical content and tools that empower trainers to help illiterate adults move towards a first job or training opportunity. Project tools were designed to foster collaboration, autonomy and problem-solving, rebuild self-confidence, support professional progression, and encourage personal initiative and collective commitment. The workshops aim to make training more accessible, create social ties and reinforce a sense of belonging to the community. For trainers, the project sought to raise awareness of illiteracy, revitalise training practices, and involve them in co-constructing programmes with a renewed vision of their role. It promoted individualised pathways, self-assessment and formalised progress monitoring, while for organisations and companies it aimed to improve training design, adopt more dynamic methods, develop staff competences and open new directions in adult basic education, using real-life experiences as a strong motivational driver.
Activities
The project was implemented through a structured sequence of activities. First, partners organised Study Circles to analyse needs, identify skills to be developed and design an evaluation matrix, forming the basis for a trainer’s guide on thematic workshops against illiteracy. Then, a skills map and toolset with clear indicators and descriptors was created, supported by interview guidelines, allowing participants to visualise their progress and trainers to provide an external, structured evaluation. On this foundation, the consortium designed the WIFI workshops, integrating the eight EU key competences into practical exercises, and developed a model for literacy curricula that can be implemented in training centres without major additional investment, using manual production and daily life activities as learning situations.
