About the project

The LIAISON project addresses the challenges faced by multicultural and heterogeneous local communities where interaction between groups is limited and social life is often marked by prejudices, mistrust and discrimination. In these contexts, there are many actors present – community leaders, civil society organisations (CSOs), migrant associations, Muslim communities and local authorities – but cooperation networks are weak and communication between them is fragmented.

LIAISON aims to turn this fragmented landscape into a cooperative ecosystem, where local actors work together to understand and address the root causes of societal polarisation and intolerance. By using a mutual learning and skill-sharing approach, the project supports the creation of shared spaces, joint initiatives and intercultural dialogue structures that foster trust, mutual understanding and a stronger sense of belonging for all groups. Over its lifetime, LIAISON engages community members directly through workshops and fairs, and reaches a wider audience through awareness-raising actions in schools, public spaces and online campaigns, involving thousands of people from different cultural, religious and social backgrounds.

Objectives

LIAISON pursues three closely connected objectives.

First, it seeks to promote intercultural understanding between local residents, migrant communities and Muslim communities by involving them in a shared process of analysing and tackling the drivers of polarisation and intolerance in their cities. Rather than treating them as separate “target groups”, the project brings them together as co-creators of solutions.

Second, it aims to build the capacity of local CSOs, migrant associations and Muslim communities to work together more strategically. Through training, shadowing and joint initiatives, these actors strengthen their skills in cross-cultural communication, mutual learning, joint project design and implementation, and become better equipped to foster tolerance and mutual knowledge in their everyday work.

Third, LIAISON strives to reinforce cooperation between civil society, community leaders and local authorities, empowering them to establish structured dialogue mechanisms and co-develop local responses to hate speech, discrimination and social tensions. By actively involving these groups in joint initiatives and in the testing of a transferable Intercultural City Cooperation Model, the project increases their ownership of the process and raises awareness of how mutual learning approaches can prevent hatred and support more cohesive communities.
