About the project
The M4M (Mentoring for Migrants) project focuses on the inclusion of newly-arrived migrants and refugees who often face language barriers, unfamiliar social norms, educational gaps and unequal access to city services. These barriers can lead to spatial relegation, insecurity, marginalisation and even violence, resulting in isolation and failed integration. M4M responds by using a community-based Buddy System, connecting migrants with trained local mentors to support everyday autonomy (public transport, access to services, administration, connectivity, etc.) and to build trusting, stable relationships that strengthen their integration into the host society.
Objectives
The general objective of M4M is to foster the inclusion of refugees and migrants in their host communities through mentoring. The project promotes empowerment of migrants and creates links between refugee associations, social services, local administrations and volunteer groups. Through the Buddy System, M4M aims at personal, social and professional development: helping migrants build a social network, gain orientation in the new culture, and have a reliable contact point for questions and obstacles. At the same time, it strengthens the capacity of professionals and volunteers to design, implement and sustain mentoring programmes that benefit both migrants and the wider community.
Activities
Following a social innovation methodology (exploration, development, test, evaluation and dissemination), partners first conducted an evidence review on the conditions and services for newly-arrived migrants in Portugal, France, Austria, Greece, Italy and Romania, and collected good practices. On this basis they co-produced several intellectual outputs with the participation of project teams, researchers, decision-makers, social workers, migrants, refugees and experts by experience. These include: an Evidence Review and synthesis report, a Buddy System Service Model (mentoring guide tested with around 90 participants), a Training Curriculum for professionals and volunteers (piloted with 186 participants), and a Guide on Integrated Services and social/multicultural dialogue to help organisations use M4M tools in their mentoring programmes. All outputs were tested in validation workshops and pilots, refined through participant feedback and then disseminated via 10 multiplier events (298 participants) and 4 short-term trainings (74 participants) at European, national and local level, ensuring that the M4M model and resources are publicly available and transferable to other contexts.
